The Anson County Board of Commissioners and the Board of Health are pleased to confirm the opening of the Anson County Animal Shelter in April 2014.  This is a modern 5,500 square foot facility conveniently located on Highway 74 in Polkton.

Staffing will consist of an Animal Services Director, two animal control officers and two part-time shelter assistants.  This vacancy notice is for the Animal Services Director, who is responsible for managing the animal shelter and animal control for Anson County, population 26,948.

Description of Work - Reporting to the Health Director, the Animal Services Director is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, managing and supervising the daily activities of the animal shelter and animal control to ensure compliance with all applicable state and local laws, rules and regulations. Additionally, the Animal Services Director will be involved in developing and overseeing volunteer, adoption and public education programs; and supporting fundraising efforts and fostering good community relations.  Other duties include training and evaluating staff, developing and monitoring the budget, evaluating program and community needs and representing the animal services program in meetings with county officials and community agencies. 

Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesThe ideal candidate will have at least three (3) years of experience in shelter management and animal control field operations, and current knowledge of public health rabies laws and NCDA requirements.  A strong background in managing staff, training and mentoring personnel and volunteers, along with good interpersonal and leadership skills is essential in this position.  Demonstrated expertise in working with diverse constituents, including public customers, volunteers and animal activists is highly desirable.  A commitment to high quality animal care standards and to the successful placement of adoptable animals is mandatory.  Adequate computer knowledge and skills is necessary to conduct business activities.   

The ideal candidate will possess the abilities to:

·         Ensure that shelter animals receive proper care;

·         Screen animals upon arrival at shelter;

·         Maintain clean facilities and adequate inventories of food, supplies and equipment;

·         Plan, manage, and direct work of shelter staff, animal control officers and volunteers;

·         Read, interpret and explain rules, regulations, and procedures;

·         Hire, train and supervise animal control officers and shelter staff;

·         Supervise volunteers; 

·         Establish and maintain effective relationships with the public;

·         Use shelter management and animal control equipment, including biohazards, grooming tools, communication radios, animal capture devices, etc.;

·         Inaugurate and sustain working relationships with public health and NCDA officials;

·         Prepare and submit all animal control/shelter paperwork, reports, etc. as required.

Minimum Training and Experience RequirementsGraduation from high school and three years of experience in animal care, shelter management and animal control; prefer a Veterinary Technician Degree with current State Euthanasia and Vaccination Certifications.  

Candidate must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license.  The shelter is a 7 day-a-week operation that will require weekend, holiday and variable shift hours to be worked by the Director and staff.
