New Job Vacancy -- Animal Control Officer




Salary Grade: 61 Hiring Range ($25,947 - $27,245)

The Anson County Board of Commissioners and the Board of Health are pleased to confirm the opening of the Anson County Animal Shelter in April 2014.  This is a modern 5,500 square foot facility conveniently located on Highway 74 in Polkton.

Staffing will consist of an Animal Services Director, two animal control officers and two part-time shelter assistants.  This vacancy notice is for one of the Animal Control Officers that will be responsible for performing animal control services, both in the field and in the shelter.

Description of Work - Reporting to the Animal Services Director, this position is responsible for a full range of animal control services that require a high degree of independence and accountability. 

Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesThe ideal candidate will have at least three (3) years of experience in animal control and shelter operations, and current knowledge of public health rabies laws and NCDA requirements.  Excellent interpersonal skills, reliability, and the ability to perform physically and mentally demanding work are essential for success in this position.  Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities include:

  • Reading and comprehending the laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to animal control
  • Handling animals humanely, caringly and safely
  • Recognizing symptoms of animal diseases
  • Understanding and enforcing rabies general statutes
  • Preparing and maintaining accurate records
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with the public and other employees
  • Operating/using safely and accurately department approved equipment and devices
  • Explaining animal control procedures and regulations to the public
  • Using telephones, radio, fax, copier, computer, etc.
  • Performing physically demanding job duties
  • Promoting quality customer service
  • Working well in a team oriented work environment

Minimum Training and Experience RequirementsGraduation from high school and three years of experience in animal care, shelter operations and animal control; prefer a Veterinary Technician Degree with current State Euthanasia and Vaccination Certifications.  

Candidate must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license and a good driving record.  The animal services department is a 7 day-a-week operation that will require weekend, holiday and variable shift hours to be worked.
