Emergency Medical Services Shift Supervisor

Salary Grade 68: Minimum $35,475, Maximum $54,984

(Hiring Rate:  $35,475 – $37,248)

Reporting to the EMS director, an employee in this class is responsible for coordinating and supervising the activities of other EMT’s (Paramedics and Basics) on an assigned shift and insures all equipment and supplies are properly maintained.  Work involves identifying staffing and materials needed for daily operations, making assignments, and providing Paramedic medical services to supplement the work of other staff and to evaluate services provided.

Work involves a broad range of professional and public contacts and considerable independent initiative, judgment and teamwork.  The employee is subject to hazards in the emergency management work including working in both inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, hazardous fumes, dusts, odors, mists, and gases. 

Physical requirements

Employee must be able to perform basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling, fingering, grasping, talking, and hearing.  Employee must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  Must possess visual acuity necessary to prepare and analyze data, for extensive reading and work with figures; to operate a computer, to use measuring devices, to operate a motor vehicle; and to determine accuracy and neatness of work.

Education and Experience

Candidate must be a graduate from a community college or technical school with a two year degree in emergency medical services or a related field and considerable emergency services experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Special Requirement

This employee must be certified by the NC Office of EMS as an EMT-Paramedic and possess a NC driver’s license.  EMS is a 24/7 operation and the shift supervisor must be available to work rotating shifts, which include some nights, weekends and holidays.
